Prologue

What would you do? On what side of the (hi)story would you be? What if...? These are the questions I always asked myself while studying history. Maybe it's because we now live in a world which provides an overwhelming amount of information about bad news every second, but it feels like today's reality is aspiring to become one of those historically defining chapters. Comedians make us feel concerned and politicians make us laugh - in the better case (we all know who I am talking about). And the question I asked while studying the rise of Nazism now seems to be more pressing than ever.

That's why I decided to take action. I refuse to just sit on a couch and watch the news about the biggest humanitarian crisis in years and then pretend it's not my business. It is. It's not like I have anything more important to do, nothing can compare. So I decided to spend this summer differently and joined a group of volunteers traveling to Berlin, the city with the highest number of refugees in Europe. We will work with the locals there to serve refugees and be there to listen for those who need it. We will also shoot a documentary recording their stories to spread awareness regarding the phenomenon of migration.

I am the medic of the group, I have a background in the psychology of religion and emergency medicine and I will attempt to write about the voyage here, on this blog. We shall be heading out soon. The question "What would you do?" is becoming "What am I doing?".
